How you help is up to you...
VOLUNTEERS are the driving force behind Habitat for
Humanity – those who contribute an hour, a day, a week, a few
months, or many years to put the mission of Habitat into motion.
Volunteers, joining with the future homeowner families, provide virtually all
of the house building labor. But there are also many
opportunities beyond the hammer. House building is also
made possible through planning, fundraising, clerical, and retail help as
well as lending a hand in so many other ways.
You will find that volunteering with Habitat for Humanity is a very
rewarding experience. Habitat work sites are places to build
relationships as well as houses. Habitat assignments, whether on a build
site or in our ReStore, are all exercises in TEAMWORK! Working together toward
a common goal, diverse individuals find common ground, lasting friendships, and
a sense of purpose and accomplishment.
Once you start volunteering, you won’t want to stop! The
personal rewards make every task fulfilling!
To start volunteering with Habitat for Humanity now, please fill out our
VOLUNTEER FORM and email, fax, or mail
it into the Habitat office. And check out all the different possibilities
below:

Construction Volunteers
We need skilled and unskilled individuals and groups to partner with us in
building homes as well as to assist with volunteer management. A
particular volunteer need in construction is the expertise of professional
sub-contractors such as drywall tapers, vinyl/carpet installers, cabinet
installers, and finish carpenters.
Group Volunteer Opportunities
Group construction projects with Habitat for Humanity provide a wonderful
opportunity for bonding and learning to work together, while participants feel
great about doing something meaningful and essential for the community!
We welcome groups from all walks of life to join us on the worksite.
From corporate groups to groups of all faiths to high school and college groups
– we will work with anyone who will partner with us to provide decent and
affordable housing for people in Washington County. We can currently work
with groups of up to 10-25 people at time, but multiple dates can be scheduled
to accommodate larger groups.
Individual Volunteer Opportunities
Don't have a group? No problem, we always have room for "just one
more"...fill out the volunteer form and let us know where your interested in
helping.
Hospitality Volunteers
Can you provide lunch for a site work team? We need volunteers
to donate, prepare and deliver lunches and snacks to
construction volunteers to keep them going during a long day of physical
exertion. Hospitality volunteers also greet volunteers on the
construction sites, have them sign in, introduce the family to the volunteers,
and just say thank you to the construction volunteers.
Family Service Volunteers
Family Services is a multi-faceted committee. They assist the family
on many levels and provide opportunity for personal growth as they meet the
ever-changing needs of our Habitat families.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Meet and greet the public! Make the people of our area aware of our
ministry and mission by attending various community events.
HELP IDENTIFY AND QUALIFY FAMILIES
Habitat is not a perfect fit for every family. Family Services needs
help with finding families that MAY be a good fit for our program and further
screening those families to see if they qualify for the program.
ORIENTATION
Everyone likes to make an informed choice. Habitat needs people to
hold orientation sessions to help potential program participants make educated
decisions about their housing future. Assist the applicants with the
application process and explain the program to foster understanding.
MENTOR
Watch our partner families blossom from month-to-month renters into
homeowners. We need YOU to support our families by offering a hand up,
not a hand out. More specifically, our families will need you to commit
up to two years as they navigate the path to home ownership under your
guidance. Some of your tasks may include the following:
- Steer the family in the direction of helpful and appropriate community
resources such as budgeting classes, basic home maintenance workshops,
counseling, and others—all leading up to self-sufficiency
- Be available to the family as they tackle the emotional and physical
trials of sweat equity hours and the ups and downs and ins and outs of
the construction process
- Stand beside the family during the dedication and on move in day
- Help the family locate and access resources that meet their specific
needs for up to a year after they have purchased their home
Committee
Volunteers
Want to help Habitat for Humanity build affordable houses without
wielding a hammer? We always need action-minded individuals to
help on our committees! If you have interest in planning, fundraising,
publicity, organizing, or one of a number of other important tasks, we need
you! For a full list of committee opportunities, click here.
Office & Special Events Volunteers
We have opportunities in our office for data entry, mailings, filing, and
other office needs. Volunteers must be comfortable with computers and
detail oriented.
We also need volunteers to help with special events, work with community
groups who hold fundraisers to benefit Habitat, and assist in planning special
events.
Youth Volunteers
Yes! Youth 16 and older CAN help on a construction site as
long as they have parental consent. Habitat encourages church youth
groups and other groups of youth to participate in day or week projects where
they can learn about building a house, develop camaraderie, experience the joy
of helping others, and grow in their faith.
Even children under the age of 16 can help with a Habitat house! We
have many non-construction activities designed specifically for children of
various age groups from 5 – 16, as well as lesson plans for Sunday School
classes or school projects. Church or school leaders should contact the
Habitat for Humanity of Washington County office for more
information.
ReStore Volunteers
The ReStore, Habitat's very own home improvement discount store also
provides a wide array of volunteer opportunities. Retail experience isn't
necessary, just the desire to make a difference. Stop on by and see what
you can do!
